Fire Up the Bbq, But Do it Outside!

If you love to barbecue but hate the mess, consider creating an outdoor kitchen area with a bbq islands in it. These islands can be very fancy or very simple, the choice is yours as to budget and design and what you want to include in your outdoor kitchen. The bbq islands are usually the center point in a curved design so you can move from the grill to the counter tops etc.

They often come with mosaic inlays and are quite durable and beautiful. I’ve even seen these bbq islands (usually as part of a complete outdoor kitchen set up) with an umbrellas in the countertop, so with stools on the other side the counter serves as a bar or eating bar. And your guests can chat with you when you are grilling, as long as the smoke is blowing the other way! Of course, the wind depends entirely on Mother Nature.

I have seen outdoor kitchens run the gamut from a small stainless steel refrigerator, a modest grill and perhaps some tools, to very fancy rigs in mansion gardens. They are also a big feature if you are renovating your home with an eye to reselling it a little later. They add tremendous value to a home, especially of you live in a favorable climate. While a daytime barbecue is great in the spring, summer or fall, using your outdoor kitchen at night for drinks around a fireplace, perhaps a wine tasting party with grilled salmon and veggie appetizers would be a wonderful way to stimulate conversation.

You can’t see the stars as you sit with friends and family, if you are indoors! A tip for cooking fish or veggies, which may tend to be more fragile on the grill than say, a steak, is to wrap them in aluminum foil after basting with olive oil and herbs, then grill them for a little while and you will have a wonderful, delicious and good for you meal. This would be a treat for the people who fish in your family, and if the fisherman or gal is a child, what better way to show them the process from the wild or a farm, to the dinner table.

Susan James has lived in many countries with great seasonal weather that lends itself to outdoor cooking. With the advent and popularity of easily available stainless steel appliances for both indoor and Outdoor Kitchens, plus the great new designs in bbq islands, she finds that cooking for her family in California, where she has lived for over thirty years, a pleasure that only increases with time.

The Basic BBQ Tools

Outdoor BBQ season is coming up fast, and some of the first things we all will need is a few new tools for the grill, the very basic tools, the tongs, forks, and turners. Stainless steel bbq tools are perfect for what we need to do on the grill, and because there stainless you don’t have to worry about them rusting like your old set, I’ve had that happen to me too many times. I’m going to let you know what to look for in a basic 3 tool set.

Tongs, you want nice long tongs, long enough to reach the back of the grill without burning your hand, but not so long that you have trouble with them, you also want to look for the tongs with the teeth at the end, there’s nothing worse than those tongs with the hollow triangles at the end. Lastly like I said before stainless would be best if you want to avoid rusting, and stainless steel will be less flimsy.

Forks, well I don’t like to poke at my meat really just because you will let a lot of the tasty juices run. Forks are handy for a few things though, I like to use them for grilling root vegetables, potatoes, carrots, and even fruits. You want a strong fork that wont bend, its best to get the stainless, if you want to save money and not replace them year after year.

Turners/Flippers, you will want a nice sturdy turner, one that can slide easily under burgers, onions, and any other flat food you may cook on the grill, make sure you get a flipper that wont heat up and burn your hands, and like I mentioned for all the others stainless steel will last, so that’s what I would aim for if I wanted a long lasting basic bbq tool kit.

Can a household gas bbq achieve the same results as a commercial charbroiler?

I’m considering using a Garland charbroiler for recreational use. Bought it from restaurant liquidation. Converting supply line to natural gas quick-connect. I’m told the char-broiled steakhouse flavour is simply a result of BTU’s and that the Home Depot variety of gas bbq could not fully replicate that cooking method.

Home Barbeque

Gas BBQ burner grills work by a spark igniting the gas within the grill. Gas grills typically have a knob or button in which you push, which in turn activates a small hammer. The hammer hit’s the top of an ignition crystal. Then the burner mixes the gas with oxygen and spreads it all over the cooking surface.

Barbequing is typically thought of as a summer event, but some diehard fans of barbeque will not think twice about breaking out their barbeque grills right in the middle of winter.

Grillers in the southern states may not face the problem, but if you live past the lower states, then chances are your Winter includes a large amount of snow. Smokers and charcoal grills present a problem as you must set the grill up properly, and then wait for the grill to get ready. This can take hours, so the idea of standing outside waiting on the grill may not sound appealing in 3 foot of snow. Gas grills give you the opportunity of quickly cooking barbeque.

home barbeque

Another issue found with out types of grills is the cleanup involved. Once you are done grilling with a smoker or charcoal grill, you are then required to clean out the burned remains. In 3 feet of snow, chances are that you do not have a place readily available for disposal. Fire hazards come with the burnt coals and wood chips. Gas grills will simply need a wipe down before it can be stored away for the next time.

Gas grills, unlike some of the other grills types, have the ability to come with many different types of cooking surfaces. These different cooking surfaces include a BBQ surface, a flat grill, and a ribbed grill. Some grills even offer these types of surfaces as none stick, which allow you to cook a whole array of foods that you would not be able to cook on a grill otherwise. You will be able to cook your whole meal, including side dishes if you plan correctly. Some gas grills even contain a Wok type surface for cooking pasta and rise dishes, or a full rotisserie set that allows you to cook rotisserie chicken.

A feature that comes with different cooking surfaces is the ability to cook different foods, at different temperatures, at the same time. This feature is available if your gas grill have separate burners. This allows you to cook your meals much more quickly. Some gas grills even come with a warming feature, which will keep your food warm while the rest of it finishes cooking.

Gas grills usually contain a built in thermometer, which will aide you in cooking. You will know the exact temperature you are cooking at. Charcoal and Smoker grills do not typically contain this feature, which either leaves you guessing what temperatures you are cooking at, or requires you to buy extra equipment in order to find out what temperature your food is.

Gas grills have safely concerns all of its own, but they are unmatched by other types of grills. Propane gas is extremely flammable if not used correctly. Other grills however, present higher opportunities for fire as they cook with an open flame. Gas grills are typical built much sturdier then their more simpler counterparts.

If you are considering traveling with your barbeque grill, a gas grill may be the best option. Gas grills come in small sizes which are perfect for traveling. Small size gas containers are available at your local grocery store or department store, which allows you to easily transport the fuel source as well.
